A history of the Akyazi class:

In 2269 Starfleet put forward proposal 347145 for 178 ships to replace the aging Kiaga and Agilis class Perimeter Action Ships. A year later, a Federation sub-committee under Eso Procuia questioned the need for 178 ships given the UFP mandate for peaceful dialogue and a decline in hostilities on the border. In the November the controversial findings of the investigation were to put the new Perimeter Action Ships on indefinate hold and to order extra units of Belknap class.

In 2272 Starfleet lobbied for a new Borderspace Operations Platform under Perimeter Action Platform - Experimental. Avondale and Temerand Duplicat both commence work on programmes. In 2273 1/3 scale prototypes were tested; PAPE was terminated. In 2277 Councillor Arman Thel unsuccessfully lobbied to get the PAS programme resumed. In 2280 Temerand Duplicat funded an internal programme called IPP-1 or Internal Perimeter Programme One; Several PAS designs were produced at their Mars facility.

May 2283 saw the Klingons launch their Taal Tan Offensive, which lasted five months and cost thousands of lives. A new Starfleet Commander-in-Chief, Lars-Erik Valdemar, was named a month later in June. Valdemar promised Starfleet would be rejuvenated. July saw the Temerand Duplicat design chosen to be the NX-1010 Akyazi design. The misgivings of the Federation Council had been swept aside by the harsh realities of border conflict. In the August, 105 Akyazi class were approved by the Federation Council. In January 2284 prototype testing continued on prototypes 2 and 3 at Temerand Duplicat. Prototype 001 was loaned to Starfleet for evaluation.

March 2284 Temerand experiments with improvements to the Akyazi design; this will evolve into the Arbiter sub-class. All internal systems are finalised on the Akyazi design. 11 support crew are killed on Prototype 002. In the April, Tacfleet returned the prototype 001 with a list of design improvements and changes. These are put into immediate action. May 2284 saw prototype 001 upgrading at Tamerand. 002 was undergoing warp stress testing. 003 was testing internal systems. 004 was testing sublight systems. 005 - 010 prototypes were with Starfleet: 005 was testing the "Iulus" defensive system, 006 was at Starbase 6 testing the Nike system. 007 was at Starbase 8 undergoing task frce compatability trials. 008 - 010 were designated flight training ships, training crews out of Starbase 2 on the type. Prototype 011 was at Tamerand Duplicat, testing for future designs. June 16th 2284 saw NX-1010 construction started.

August 2284 saw Prototype 007 sent to Tacfleet for performance evaluation. In September the Arbiter improvements were put into Prototype 006 as a complete testbed. On October 2nd 2284, 42 Arbiter class were ordered by the Federation Council. On January 16th 2285, Prototype 008 was lost along with five engineering personnel. March saw te construction of Akyazi and Akitsu delayed to allow modifications to be made. July 24th 2285 constrction was started on NX-1048 Arbiter. Barely a year later on August 21st 2286, U.S.S. Arbiter was launched. February 2288 there was a collision between starships Eiger and Arashi at Makus during an exercise.

The first combat by the Akyazi class took place on January 11th 2287 when the starships Eleusis and Acavus engaged four Orion ships near the Klingon border. The Perimeter Action Ships were victorious, which vindicated the design specification to be able to engage five K'teremny class Klingon warships and hold them for 30 minutes. April 3rd 2289 U.S.S. Abreus was ambushed by seven hostiles, later believed to be Klingon. Later in the year, U.S.S. Aravca was destroyed by three unidentified ships in Federation space.

    Perimeter Action Ship operational policy:

Perimeter Action Ships are the first line of defence in the Tacfleet arsenal. After the reluctance of the Federation Council to approve the Akyazi class design, and even when it was the number ordered was reduced from 178 to 105 Akyazi class in 3 batches. They usually operate in threes out of the perimeter starbases, far beyond the central colonies. In the modern age, Admiral Sulu's starbase construction programme has meant that the Perimeter Action Ships are based closer to federal administrative facilities than before.

Several member worlds expressed their objection to the Perimeter Action Ship programme: Vulcan, Delta and Betazed. This flies in the face of approval of the dreadnought programmes at the same time. Perimeter Action Ships come under Tacfleet, which itself was formed on June 7th 2251. Perimeter Action Ships are at the vanguard, along with monitoring stations and sensor nets. The Faron class PA 8300 and Dupleix PA 2346 programmes were designed to supplement the Akyazi class. The General War, Tabula Rasa Incident and ISC Pacification War all worked together to ensure furher batches and upgrades to the Akyazi class were authorised by the Federation Council.

11402 Ariadne From the Star Trek: Intrepid fan film series.

SS Ariadne from Star Trek Intrepid.Author's Notes:

Star Trek: Intrepid features NAR 11402, SS Ariadne, a former member of this class. Ships of the Starfleet Vol. 2 introduces the Perimeter Action Ship and its history, reproduced in part here. It seems strange that the pacifist Federation Council was reluctant to order the PAS, when they were delivering Federation class dreadnoughts at the time.

These are the Victorian Royal Navy gunboats of Starfleet. The can be deployed to address brushfires and deal with incoming threats. The unnamed encounter in 2289 could well be the Interstellar Concordium, as the Andromedan Intruders operate solo (and are not featured in the Interim Years). It seems the Taal Tan Offensive in 2283 by the Klingons may have ironically served to reinforce Starfleet's borders. And the Perimeter Action Ships are ideal for dealing with Orion pirates.

The third batch was a modified version called the Akula class. This name has been used for the destroyers from SFC:2 NCC-278A. That, and the ugly design, has made me slightly re-write things that future ships are modified versions of the Akyazi design. The Dupleix class was designed to supplement the Akyazi class but only as phaser cannons. The reliance on phasers is a shortcoming (as Kirk showed in the wormhole in TMP). The registry of Ariadne as 11402 suggests more batches of Akyazi class.
